Alimamy Joins our Team

Alimamy Samura has taken the role of Project Supervisor in Sierra Leone. He will make sure our schools and other projects are well maintained and he will supervise future projects. We have supplied a motorcycle and pay him a fee which is very modest by our standards. He has worked with the Chief Executive before and he can vouch for his enthusiasm and ability.

Liam's Walk, A Huge Success !

The sun beamed down on hundreds of our friends, sponsors and supporters who completed a sponsored walk in memory of Liam Manley that took place in Blarney on Saturday 8th of April. Hundreds of people trekked Clogheenmilcon walk to honour the memory of Liam Manley who died just over a year ago whilst his wife Jackie was in Sierra Leone, with other family members, to officially open a school they had raised funds to build and equip. All funds raised on the walk on Saturday are going directly towards our upcoming projects in Sierra Leone. We would like to extend a heartfelt "Thank You" to Jackie, her daughters Ellen, Katherine, Maud and Nancy who together made this day happen, and of course, made it so special.

Report on visit to Sierra Leone

Founder members of the foundation, Bernice O’Brien and John Mitchel visited Sierra Leone along with Debbie O’Connell and three students from Scoil Mhuire Cork, (Leah Soden, Roisin O’Donnell and Sarah Healy) and their teacher Edwina Nolan.

The highlight of the trip was the opening of the Liam Manley Community School in the poor village of Mange Acre.

According to journalist, Hassan Bruz:

“It was the day when the age-old dream of the inhabitants was actualised”

Section Chief Pa Rok said the community had been without a school for decades.

We also visited the schools we had previously funded.

Ms. Madina Rahman, Deputy Minister of Health and Sanitation, met our delegation and reacted positively to our plan to build the first centre in West Africa for children with Down’s Syndrome.

Mr. Usman Konteh, MP for Marampa invited us to meet the community in Maselthleh village to consider the possibility of building a school there for 250 children, most of whom have never been to school. It was a very positive experience and this may be a future project.

REPORT ON WATER TANK CONSTRUCTION PROJECT IN EFAH VILLAGE

The project is the building of a 20 cubic meter water tank in the Efah village. The catchment area is situated some 4km off the road on the foothills of Koano village just after Kugwe village. The Chief and people of Efah village having problem with adequate water supply in the village, needed a big reservoir to guarantee constant water supply. The initial cost of the project drawn up by the technician amounted to 4,406,000Frs equivalent to six thousand seven hundred euros.

MAIDEN VISIT OF JOHN MITCHEL TO CAMEROON

John Mitchel and his team from Cork, Ireland visited Cameroon on the 22nd March 2016 to inaugurate a seven classroom primary school building complex sponsored by them. On crossing to Koana, he was met by a strong hospitality offered by the Chief and people of Efah Village which is equally hosting St John of God Health Centre annex. It should be recalled that the health centre is the fruit of our outreach programmes that was closely assisted by John Mitchel, St John of God Development Company and a host of other friends in Holland.

Seeing the hospitality of the Efah village people and their basic needs, John Mitchel promised to assist them.

REMAINING WORKS

Whats remaining is the filtration chambers that will host the water and filter it before transporting to the tank through pipes.

CONCLUSION

The village people are very happy so far with the project. So far the tank is completed and plans are on the way to engage on the filtration chambers. When all is completed, it will greatly alleviate the problem of water in the village and also assist the health facility there.
